The drive along Highway 23 is a soul-affirming voyage through miles and miles of fields of grain. Pretty prairie towns dot the landscape all along this corridor, and each is very much like the other, save one – a town that in 1915 was given an auspicious name that would distinguish it from the rest and serve to create a culture that’s unlike any other in southern Alberta.
Vulcan is located halfway between Lethbridge and Calgary, and although agriculture is the lifeblood of the town, tourism has become an important part of the community’s makeup. Ever since the words “To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before” became iconic, the town of Vulcan has been a must-see destination. Aside from the astounding array of Star Trek related tourist attractions in town, Vulcan is a community filled with warm and welcoming people who are exceedingly proud of their farming foundation, and take every occasion to celebrate through a variety of annual community events.
