5 Things to do in the Crowsnest Pass
Nestled in the Rocky Mountains in the extreme west of Southern Alberta, the Crowsnest Pass has a little something for everyone. Witness the remains of a tragic rockslide, mingle with locals at the many summer events in the area, or get your adrenaline flowing on a mountain bike trail at the Pass Powderkeg. For the summertime explorer, Crowsnest Pass is the ultimate destination.
First up, and an easy way to placate the history buffs in the group, get in touch with the history of the region at Leitch Collieries, Frank Slide Interpretive Centre, and Bellevue Underground Mine. The bones of what was once one of Canada’s most prolific coal mines rest in ghostly silence along the Crowsnest Highway. Now, Leitch Collieries is a popular picnic spot; an ideal location for a sandwich and some quick historical knowledge. The remains of the deadliest rockslide to ever happen in Canada are hard to miss when driving along Highway 3. Massive debris still marks the landscape as a tragic reminder of the demise of the town of Frank. At the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre, interactive displays, audio-visual experiences and activity areas place guests in the moments before, during and after the great rock avalanche. And finally, dig into the history of coal mining in the Crowsnest Pass at the Bellevue Underground Mine. Tour underground tunnels, explore artifacts and hear about the many men who risked and lost their lives trying to keep up with the world demand for coal.
When the weather warms up, skis get ditched and mountain bikes come out to play! The trails in the Pass range from beginner to expert, single track, and cross-country, or show off your skills at the bike park. Take in the gorgeous mountain scenery as you bike some trails or if biking is not for you, breathe in the fresh mountain air on a peaceful hike. After all the physical activity cool off in the Crowsnest Pass Community Swimming Pool! The pool is an outdoor facility that is the perfect ending to a great experience in the Crowsnest Pass.
